Launchpad is a destination for start-ups to showcase unique products to millions of consumers world over. It will be an exclusive corner for Indian Startups to get access to big consumer markets nationally and internationally. First started in 2015, Amazon Launchpad is now available in seven regions. Launchpad will help startups to launch, market and distribute their products to Amazon customers across India and around the world via a dedicated store. Mahaparinirwan Diwas is observed across India on 6 December . Dr. Ambedkar died on 6th December 1956. Since then, Mahaparinirwan Diwas is observed every year to pay him tributes. The Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram launched ‘Stanpan Suraksha’ mobile application to promote breastfeeding. App will keep a tab on “inappropriate” promotion of baby food items. The mobile application has been developed by the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI). Stanpan Suraksha is first-of-its-kind app developed for promoting breastfeeding. It aims to become instrumental in gathering incremental evidence to report on promotion of baby foods from remote locations. After the demise of AIADMK supremo & Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, her loyalist Ottakara Panneerselvam has been sworn in as Chief Minister. O Panneerselvam started his political career as a chairman of Periyakulam Municipality from 1996 to 2001. He is the 19th CM of Tamil Nadu and was unanimously elected. KONKAN 16 is the 2016 edition of the annual bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of united kingdom. It is being held at Mumbai and Goa. The exercise hosted in rotation by both the Navies, has grown in complexity, scale and intensity. he exercise will involve sharing of best practices and lessons learnt from recent operations, especially in the field of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and Non-combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO). Exercise KONKAN was institutionalized in 2004. The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has announced that the state would be setting up a special panel to stop child trafficking. The goal of the Winter Fog Experiment (WIFEX) is to develop methods for forecasting winter fog on various temporal and spatial scales. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched AP Purse mobile app featuring 13 mobile banking & 10 mobile wallet options. The App will be helpful to overcome shortage of small currency. People can pay their bills using the app and carry out their cashless transactions. The State government also introduced cashless transactions at fair price shops. With the aim of conducting free, fair, peaceful and inclusive elections in the country, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has brought together delegates from Election Management Bodies (EMBs) of SAARC Countries. The officials from SAARC countries are in India for training at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM). The course is being sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. IIIDEM is an advanced resource centre of learning, research, training and extension for participatory democracy and election management. The World Economic Forum (WEF) has named Hindi language ranked 10th in the top 10 most powerful languages on the planet. The list features English as the most powerful language followed by Mandarin. INDRA is a joint, bi-annual military exercise conducted by India and Russia. The Russian-Indian Indra NAVY-2016 naval exercise will be held from 14th to 21st December. The exercise will be held in the city of Visakhapatnam and in the Bay of Bengal. It included live firing drills, air defence and anti submarine operations. The first Russian-Indian naval exercises were held in May 2003. The 5th India-Arab Partnership Conference held in Muscat, Oman. The conference is jointly organised by the Oman Foreign Ministry, Arab League Secretariat and the Ministry of External Affairs in India. The most important part of the partnership conference is economic cooperation between India and Arab Countries. The theme of the conference is ‘Partnership towards innovation and cooperation in Information Technology’. In a marketing initiative, the Visakhapatnam-Nizamuddin Samta Express train named as Vizag Steel Samta Express. The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has chosen the Samata Express to promote its brand Vizag Steel. Vizag Steel is the brand name of the state-owned RINL with an annual capacity of 6.3 million tonnes. The train was flagged off at Nizamuddin station by Railway Minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu. Venezuela has been suspended from the Mercosur trade group over its failure to comply with its commitments when it joined the group in 2012. Venezuela has not adopted all the membership rules and treaties it had promised. It has failed to meet economic, human rights and immigration accords governing the group. Mercosur is an economic and political bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Suriname are associate members. Its purpose is to promote free trade and the fluid movement of goods, people, and currency. Mercosur established in 1991 to promote free trade, it is now a full customs union and a trading bloc. Italian PM Matteo Renzi has resigned after suffering a heavy defeat in a referendum over his plan to reform the constitution. The turnout was nearly 70%, in a vote that was seen as a chance to register discontent with the prime minister. PM Renzi was the only premier left in Europe with a vision for the European Union’s future. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key unexpectedly announced his resignation. Independent candidate and pro-European Alexander Van der Bellen has won the Austria’s re-run presidential election with around 53.5% votes. Bellen had won an earlier election in May by a narrow margin after which it was declared void by the Constitutional Court due to irregularities. Uzbekistan’s Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev became the country’s second president after winning 88.61% vote in the first presidential election since the death of the authoritarian leader and President Islam Karimov. TAPI is the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan- Pakistan-India gas pipeline project. It will transport gas from Turkmenistan’s Galkynysh fields to Fazilka in India. Yes bank has launched SIMsePAY in Itanagar, a unique innovation that allows any account holder to do money transfers, pay bills, and other services without the need for a smartphone or Internet. The bank launched the services with the Arunachal Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd It is the 3rd launch after Dehradun and 2nd in Khagria, Bihar. The offering is based on a frugal sim-sleeve technology. A Coimbatore based software engineer and designer Vijay has developed a humanoid robot, which can perform multiple functions. The robot can walk, dance, sing, sit & respond to any question in more than 19 languages. The robot will be installed in banks and airports etc, which can give all flight arrival and departure details. It can also be used for educational and coding purposes. ISRO successfully executed the thirty seventh launch of its workhorse PSLV-C36 from the First Launch Pad (FLP), at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), Sriharikota. The ResourceSat-2A earth observation satellite was the only passenger on board, with a weight of 1235 kg. The new satellite is intended to continue the remote sensing data services to global users provided by it two predecessors. Public sector company MMTC (Metals and Minerals Trading gold Corporation) will tie-up with the State Bank of India (SBI) to sell government-minted “Indian Gold Coin”. The state-run bullion trader, which has already tied up with over half a dozen banks, has so far sold one lakh pieces of “Indian Gold Coin”. The coin is India’s first-ever sovereign gold offering and the only one to be hallmarked by Bureau of Indian Standards for purity. Indian Oil Corporation(IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation(BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) have signed a pact to build India’s biggest oil refinery at a cost of $30 billion on the west coast. There is a primary agreement over choosing a location in the Konkan region in Maharashtra. The three firms signed the pact for the 60-million tonne a year refinery in Maharashtra with IOC BSE 2.78 % as leader of the consortium. IOC will hold a 50 % stake in the project while BPCL and HPCL will have 25 % each. The Women and Child Development Ministry has tied up with India Post and SBI. This will offer more payment options to buyers and simplify shipping of products bought from “Mahila E-haat”, an online marketing platform for women entrepreneurs. A 16-year-old Indian environmental activist based in the UAE has won this year’s prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize for her fight for climate justice. Kehkashan Basu was presented the award by Bangladesh’s Nobel peace laureate Mohammad Yunus in The Hague. Basu is being honoured for the work done by her children organisation ‘Green Hope’, based in the United Arab Emirates, which now has more than 1,000 volunteers in 10 countries around the world. The prize is awarded annually ‘to a child who fights courageously for children’s rights’. It also includes a 100,000 euro ($106,000) investment for projects in the winner’s home country. Indian Golfer Mukesh Kumar became the oldest golfer to win an ‘Asian Tour’ title on December 4, 2016 at Delhi Golf Club (DGC ) after winning the Panasonic Open India. The 51-year-old Mukesh, who has won 123 PGTI titles, scored two-under 70 in the final round which made his total to 10-under 206 to claim the trophy. Flipkart founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal have been jointly named “Asian of the Year 2016” by Singapore-based newspaper The Straits Times. The award recognises entrepreneurs operating at the frontiers of technology’s interface with business who have launched companies that have disrupted traditional business model. Sculptor Helen Marten has won the 2016 Turner Prize for contemporary art. Turner Prize is named after English painter J. M. W. Turner presented to a British Visual artist under the age of 50. Marten was the youngest of the shortlisted artists, was announced as the winner at Tate Britain in London. The Turner Prize is the second prize in a month for Marten, who also won the inaugural Hepworth Prize. Vijaya Bank has been adjudged ‘Best Bank for SME Lending’ by Assocham. The award was received by Kishore Sansi, Managing Director & CEO of the bank. The award was given under ‘Best SME Lending’ category for public sector banks at the fourth SMEs Excellence Award function in New Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Modi was among the 11 candidates shortlisted by Time for its annual honour. Former basketball player Michael Jordan has been named the highest-paid athlete of all time by Forbes. Michael Jordan is closely followed by famous golfer Tiger Woods. Since his debut in the North American professional league in 1984 & until the end of his career Michael Jordan won $1.7 billion. All India Football Federation President Praful Patel has been appointed as a Senior Vice-President of Asian Football Confederation. Under Patel’s reign, India won the rights to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 and hosted the AFC U-16 Championship in September 2016. Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has appointed Sunil Taldar as CEO & Director of its DTH arm Airtel Digital TV. He will be a member of the Airtel management board. He takes over from incumbent Shashi Arora as MD & CEO of Airtel Payments Bank. He takes over from Shashi Arora who, after a stint of around five years as CEO & Director, has moved as MD & CEO, Airtel Payments Bank. AirAsia has announced the appointment of Amar Abrol as its Managing Director in addition to his role as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He was appointed as CEO of the airline in April 2016. Abrol holds over two decades of experience in different markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK and Malaysia. Senior IAS officer B.S. Bhullar has been appointed the Chief of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). At present, Bhullar, a 1986-batch IAS officer, is working as an Additional Secretary in Civil Aviation Ministry. He was also holding the additional charge of the DGCA. Supreme Court judge Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar will be the next Chief Justice of India. His name has been recommended by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur. Justice Khehar will be the 44th Chief Justice of India and will take up office on January 4. He was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge in September 2011. He has held office as the Chief Justice of Karnataka and Uttarakhand High Courts. The LEGO Group has announced that Bali Padda, current COO, is appointed CEO of the company as of January 1, 2017. Bali Padda takes over from Jorgen Vig Knudstorp who will head up the new entity LEGO Brand Group. Bali Padda has been with the LEGO Group for 14 years and is at present heading up Operations. The board of directors of IDFC Bank has approved the appointment of Veena Mankar as Non-Executive Chairperson, with effect from December 9, 2016, up to July 26, 2018. The appointment is subject to approval by the Reserve Bank of India. Anil Baijal stepped down from the board on December 8, 2016 at the end of his tenure from the shaft of Non-Executive Chairman of IDFC Bank Ltd. Veena Mankar started her career in 1975 with ICICI, the erstwhile development finance institution. She set up and headed the Indian Representative Office of West LB, a German State-owned bank. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away. She had scored a historic win in Tamil Nadu assembly elections about six months ago. A film actress Jayalalithaa had entered the politics in early 1980s under the guidance of her mentor MG Ramachandran. A five-time Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa pioneered a string of social sector schemes like ‘cradle to baby scheme’. Former international hockey umpire and veteran administrator, Phulel Singh Sujlana, passed away due to old age. Sujlana, who was also secretary of the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited (MHAL) for four years from 2000-2004 after being its vice president from 1997, donned quite a few hats in hockey, officiating first at the international level as an umpire at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok. Noted Journalist, Political satirist & founder editor of Thuglak magazine, Srinivasa Iyer Ramaswamy popularly known as Cho Ramaswamy passed away. He was an advisor to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. He was fearless in criticising the ruling government in the state or at the centre. He has also directed several movies and was also a screen play writer. Rashaan Salaam, who won the Heisman Trophy, U.S. college football’s highest honor & played in the National Football League has passed away. Salaam won the Heisman Trophy in 1994 ,becoming the only player from the University of Colorado to do so. The Chicago Bears chose Salaam in the first round of the 1995 NFL draft. He also played for the Cleveland Browns in a career lasting four seasons. The first American to orbit Earth, John Glenn has died. Glenn is best known for circling the earth in 1962 aboard the Friendship 7 space capsule. His achievement marked the moment the US caught up with the Soviet Union in manned space exploration. He blazed another trial in 1998 when he became the oldest man to travel to space, at age 77. For more
